Late night opening for student shop

The Shop Upstairs in Weston-super-Mare held its first late night opening event on 18th September to celebrate the start of the new term at Weston College.

The shop, which is a partnership with the College, offers 10% discount to students and rails full of high street clothing to suit the student budget.

Text books and home starter kits were also available to help new students settle into college life.

An additional £150 was taken during the event, with people popping in to snap up the new stock on display.

Will Morris has been a volunteer at the shop for over six months and is in charge of sales. He was really pleased with the event: “With sales and our tombola takings combined we had a really successful couple of hours. People were buying our bags for life to take purchases home in and we had to redress some of our displays a few times! We like it when that happens!”

Shop Manager Gail Fry said: “I’m sure this won’t be our last late night opening event, especially as we head into Autumn and Winter. Our student discount cards have been really popular with some being used as soon as we’d handed them out during Fresher’s Fayres. Were launching our Autumn/Winter range next month with something very special which we’ve been working on for a few weeks now. We’re very excited to launch it and get some new students on board as we head into the new season.”

Students are encouraged to volunteer at the shop as part of their college courses and as the new term starts there are already some new recruits building their work experience on the shop floor.
